Things to do Brisbane winter with children

We often think of Brisbane and surrounds as being only about summer, but winter in this Queensland capital can be jam-packed full of chilly season fun. To add some winter warmth to your recreation repertoire, we’ve put together five activities that are sure to bring some cosy to your chill.

Gourmet Gardening

South Bank boasts an incredible Epicurious Garden filled with all the amazing edibles that are a feast for the senses. Exotic plants and herbs adorn this thriving green space, making for a winter wonderful experience for both children and parents alike. Open all year with free entry, this central productive garden is sprouting with seasonal fresh produce, so come and get your senses in action. The harvest cart provides fruits of the garden, picked by volunteers and offered to the first-in from 7 am Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Fancy a Fort

For the history buffs, Fort Lytton National Park hosts a piece of yesteryear, only half an hour’s drive from Brisbane’s CBD. A bastion of military history, this pentagonal fort is in great condition and is surrounded by a water-filled moat. Having had its heyday in the nineteenth century, it also boasts restored guns that were cleverly designed to fire and vanish from view. For some more in-depth information, you can join a guided tour or mosey around the museum. Pack a picnic lunch and take in the river views.

Frew Park Fun

Not just your average park play; this is extraordinary adventure-equipment more akin to a theme park. The Arena is the main feature and is made up of a net and cage, tunnels, climbing wall, tube slide and the stupendous three-metre wide by three-metre high slide. For the younger children, there’s an outer area with slides, swings, a scooter-savvy path as well as a huge grassy space. A short walk from Milton station, you can catch the train or drive. For the hungry, there’s a cafe, picnic tables and barbeques.

Country Charm

If you’re feeling the pull for a longer escape, Tommerup’s Dairy Farm is a countryside champion. This working dairy farm offers your whole family an authentic great outdoor experience filled with unique hospitality and farmhouse accommodation. Just 75 mins from Brisbane, this beautiful place lets you get close to cattle, sheep, help milk the cows and join in the animal feeding time and egg collecting. The farm’s larder is laden with delicious, homegrown products and produce. It’s a real, immersive and fun farm encounter.

Strawberry Fields

For the juiciest big reds around, head just over an hour out of town to the family-owned Strawberry Fields and pick you own. Collect your container at the farm shop and then hit the acreage to pluck your prize straight from the patches. Prices vary but even out at around $16 a kilo which is worth its weight in delicious. The ‘Berry Wash’ station means you can eat your haul fresh and enjoy the mini playground without the sticky fingers. Strawberry season runs from June to November and this fabulous farm is open seven days a week, 8 am – 4.30 pm.
