Small Changes Bring Big (Sustainability) Rewards at Walker Street Early Learning Centre

Walker Street Early Learning Centre North Sydney

Sustainability is a huge part of everyday life at Walker Street Early Learning Centre. After being awarded North Sydney Council’s Green School grant in July 2016, this childcare centre in Sydney has been putting that grant money to good use—so much so that that Better Business Partnership has featured them as a case study on their website.

Since receiving the grant the team has purchased a small rainwater tank to place in their yard and a CLO’ey compost unit that turns up to 4kg of food waste per day into nutrient-rich compost for their gardens. This allows them to use rain water to care for their outdoor areas and compost to help their veggies grow all while reducing water usage and food wastage.

However it is not just the grant that has sprung the team into action. Sustainability has always been a big focus for Walker Street Early Learning Centre and here they focus on these key goals:

  • Reduce consumption of resources eg. electricity, water, paper and chemicals
  • Reduce the amount of waste they generate
  • Educate and inspire children on the topic of sustainability
  • Influence staff and families to practice sustainability in their day to day lives

A commitment to sustainability

Cathy Anderson and the team at Walker Street Early Learning Centre have been committed to sustainability and have achieved a number of great results just by making small changes to their centre. Installing Energy Efficient T5 fluorescent lighting, purchasing energy efficient appliances and using waste products in their arts and crafts are just a sample of the changes they’ve made throughout the years. To read the full list of their achievements, check out their case study here.

This year the children at Walker Street Early Learning Centre will be going on regular excursions to Coles supermarket so that they can recycle their soft plastic in the REDcycle bins. We believe the exposure of children to good sustainability practices now will help to shape the environment of tomorrow and Walker Street Early Learning Centre is a great example of that.
