A New Worm Farm, Atelier and African Drums!
27th June 2017
Lane Cove Early Learning Centre is a lovely childcare centre in Sydney. With bright and comfortable indoor spaces and large yards, it’s the perfect place for children to learn, develop and grow. Situated in a converted home, there’s a beautiful wooden deck which doubles as a performance stage, a sandpit and plenty of nature-inspired materials for children to explore.
Rochelle Browne is the Acting Centre Manager at Lane Cove Early Learning Centre and heads up a team of dedicated early learning professionals. It’s a fairly new team, however they bring with them a breadth of experience to the centre.
“Our educators vary in education and experience but all bring different skill sets to the table – Roseann speaks three languages and is very sporty, Cara is a photographer, Sophea a gardener, Elle a baker, Echo is our multilinguist and Julie is our yoga teacher,” says Rochelle.
She goes on to add, “I myself play a few instruments and have a Master’s degree in Children’s Literature which was something I studied for the joy of it – I certainly do look at some stories very differently now!”
Special visitors, excursions and exciting events!
From incursions to family events, it’s been a busy year so far at Lane Cove Early Learning Centre. Rochelle says, “We’ve been trying to do some incursions in the centre as a way of building community spirit among the parents. So far this year we have had a puppet show, a Mother’s Day tea and our first Starlight fundraiser.”
And it doesn’t end there. An African drums incursion is booked in and they’ll be holding some Indigenous education programs at the centre in the near future.
It’s an important part of the program to get out and about into the community. “We do fortnightly excursions to the Lane Cove library and we are also endeavouring to arrange excursions to our local aged care facility next door to the library so the children can visit the people there and perform a song for them. Sarajane and I are both quite musical so we can easily lead a group of singers! The children love performing so I am sure those excursions once they get started (watch this space!) will go down a treat,” shares Rochelle.
Sustainability at the centre
The centre has recently acquired a worm farm and a rain water tank which has been installed in the preschool children’s outdoor area. It’s part of a move to become a more sustainable and environmentally friendly centre. “The toddler children in particular really enjoy feeding the worms in the worm farm,” says Rochelle and it also helps children to become environmentally minded citizens.
The centre has its own atelier/art room in the preschool room which is popular with both children and visiting families. Rochelle says that many of the children often go into work there and don’t want to leave!
Rochelle says, “Currently we are using the atelier for our ongoing Vivid light project where the children are making their own Vivid light installations for the week. The children love the art room and staff have been finding ways of honouring the language of mark making for the children through the materials provided in the space so that children can use art as a means of self-expression and development. We’re also working on a long term project for a display piece for our entryway, with children making images about their favourite things about their community. It’s still in development at the moment but will be great when it’s complete!”
A kind word from some of our families
“We feel so fortunate that our child attends a centre with such caring, dedicated, creative, inspired, responsive and inclusive educators as the ones who form the Lane Cove Early Learning Centre. Our child thrives brilliantly and lovingly in their gorgeous, nurturing environment, and we feel like we’re a part of the community they’ve gone to enormous efforts to cultivate. It’s a very special place, and one of the most important relationships for our family.” – Jen S
“Why do I send my child to Early learning centre? Firstly the team are passionate about being Early Childhood Educators. The environment is filled with many different indoor and outdoor activities allowing a child-led development by following their natural interests (inspired by Reggio Emilia). A philosophy we follow in our home. My four year old daughters language and social skills have improved greatly since attending your highly regarded preschool.” -Angela K
