In Conversation with Monique Dowd Centre Manager of Taringa

18th June 2019

Purpose built and featuring age group ateliers, extensive outdoor play area and on-site chef serving 5 notoriously balanced meals a day Taringa is the latest centre to the Guardian portfolio. Centre Manager, Monique Dowd, takes a few minutes out of her busy day to share insights on her career background, her education approach and a few fun facts.

Tell us about your time working in early childcare and education so far and what inspires you each day?

I have worked in early education for over 13 years. My mum always worked in the industry and from a young age I was exposed to the sector. I always enjoyed helping mum at work during the school holidays and engaging with the children.

Every day comes with a new surprise, provides inspiration, and delivers unexpected learning and possibilities. Exploring these alongside children as we learn from each other is rewarding and inspiring. I believe you can learn a lot from children when you take the time to listen.

What have you learnt about children during your early childcare and education career and how would you sum up your approach/passion to helping them on their learning, emotional, social and life journey?

I am a big believer that it does take a village to raise a child. Therefore, I know that working collaboratively with families around their children’s development increases the benefits for the child. Families are the primary teacher and I respect this, but I also understand the value community plays in the life of a child. It is important for children to be connected to their community as this increases a child’s resilience within the world.

Children are just a smaller version of us – they are extremely capable and competent individuals who can drive their own learning journey. An Educator’s role in a child’s journey is to encourage, guide and support. Children learn best through play-based learning that is interactive with the environment and their peers, so I’ve incorporated this in my own teachings and beliefs.

What are you most excited about working with children on/teaching children about and why?

I love learning from the children every day – their quirks and view of the world so is unique. Every day reminds me of all the positive things in life and how incredibly amazing every individual is.
