For the Love of Reading

Springfield early learning centre in QLD

Literacy encompasses everything from talking and listening to visual literacies such as drawing and ebooks. At Guardian Early Learning – Springfield, literacy is all around us; we promote it throughout all aspects of learning. During the early stages of development, we use play and real-life contexts to advance writing concepts with an emphasis on literacy.

We find ways to engage children in literacy through the more apparent pathways of reading books, singing and rhymes, but we also involve them in the more unique paths to proficiency, such as creating posters for special events, pointing out signs on our excursions, or making the ‘wash your hands’ signs for our centre.

Community involvement

We believe in outreach and garnering community involvement by sharing our focus on literacy with families and the people around us. To further foster a passion for reading, we host numerous events, from the Premier’s Reading Challenge to planning book fairs and dress up days. At Springfield, we’re proud to be active members of our local library, where the fabulous librarians love to read and sing with the children. We also build robust connections with local prep teachers who teach their Prep Readiness Program once a term.

Our languages

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have educators and family members who hail from a wide range of multicultural backgrounds: Iran, Zambia, Malaysia and New Zealand, to name a few. We also have families from Serbia and The Philippines who often come in and read stories to the children, providing valuable experiences that are relevant to the world our children live in.

Cream of the crop

In the cosmos of children’s books, it’s difficult to pick favourites, but there’s a growing list of wonderful reads that our children never tire of. These are, in no particular order: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, The Gruffalo, Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas, Room on the Broom, Pig the Pug and The Very Cranky Bear. So, grab a copy to keep reading at home.

A love of literacy

A love of literacy continues to have an impact throughout a child’s life. In the early years, it’s an excellent tool for developing dramatic play, verbal progress, critical thinking and learning to recognise letters. It also assists children to interact, bond with each other and generate an adoration for stories. Above all, it’s the foundation for building the necessary literacy skills for life.

After the ending

Books are sensational springboards for conversation; we often encourage the children to predict what a book will be about by studying the cover. Then, we ask for their opinions on what happened in the story after it ended and encourage debate around what may have improved the story. These conversations help boost critical thinking and solidify the skill of being able to retell a story, as well as language, social and emotional development.

All the skills our children learn from out literacy experiences will not only prepare them for formal schooling – but for life.
