Educator in the Spotlight: Emma Chapman from Forde
6th July 2017
Cosy and comfortable interiors, large outdoor yard with sandpit, dry creek bed for water play and a team of passionate and dedicated educators, Guardian Early Learning Centre – Forde is a fantastic centre in ACT.
Many of the educators have been at the centre for years, including Emma Chapman who has been there even during the takeover from Little Learning School to Guardian. This mother of one (and soon to be two!) has been on an epic journey over the past few years, so we take two minutes to chat with Emma and find out a bit more about her.
Tell us a bit about your career background.
Before Guardian Early Learning I was a swimming instructor at Kings Swim School in Macgregor and then a swimming instructor of all ages at Aquatots in Forde and Gold Creek. I knew I wanted a career that involves encouraging the development of young children, so from Aquatots I started a career with Little Learning School Forde. I worked with Little Learning School for roughly three years before leaving to have my son. I felt I had built such strong relationships with the families and children at Forde and heard some amazing feedback from families about Guardian, which is why I came back and started my career here with Guardian.
Why did you decide to pursue early childhood education?
I chose to pursue Early Childhood Education as it is such a rewarding feeling knowing that I have contributed to the development and learning of young children. It is so important to provide children with a safe, creative and supportive learning environment. I also wanted to challenge myself and learn new things which is why i have now started to study my Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care.
What do you love most about GELC – Forde?
What I love most about Guardian Early Learning Forde is the support and teamwork of all the staff and families. It really does feel like we are one big community.
What’s the best part of your job?
I am very lucky to be currently working in the Nursery room so the best part of my job at the moment is being able to watch the children accomplish new challenges that arise, like sitting up unassisted or taking those first few steps and being able to watch them grow into strong and confident learners as they move throughout the centre. There is never a boring slow day, every day is fun and exciting.
What do you think the children love about Forde?
I think the children at Forde love our friendly supportive staff most of all as well as our newly refurbished natural yard, where all the children have the opportunity to challenge themselves and be able to interact with all ages groups.
I’m sure you’ve had many highlights in your time at Forde, can you tell us about one?
I can’t really name only one highlight. I have had here at Forde as everyday I’m surprised by the children and how fast they learn new things and accomplish challenges. But there is one highlight for me personally that made me feel very proud to work here at Guardian Early Learning Forde. Recently at Forde we went through Assessment and Rating where we were given the opportunity to discover our strengths and weaknesses and really pull together as a team… the results were very encouraging, positive and well deserved.
What’s one of your favourite childhood memories?
One of my favourite childhood memories would be my family’s yearly Christmas party, all the McCaskill families which is normally about 50 or so of us, would be at my Nan and Pops house where we would have the biggest feast and swim in the pool. We would even have Santa come and visit with a bag of pressies!
If you had a superpower what would it be?
If I had a superpower it would be to fly. I am terrified of heights so if I was able to fly I would have no choice but to overcome my fear of heights.
What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
I Played AFL for five years with Belconnen Magpies and my favourite AFL team is Collingwood
Finish this sentence. On weekends you can usually find me…
… Spending time with my family and doing house renovations during the day and at night snuggled up on the couch watching movies.
